Frequently asked questions

Are these certified safety glasses?
Yes. Prescription Harps are certified to AS/NZS 1337.6, the Australian and New Zealand standard for prescription eye protection, at medium impact level (SAI Global licence SMK41525). The frame and lenses are certified as a complete pair, which is why we only sell them as a complete unit and never as separate frames or replacement lenses. Every order includes your certification certificate, so you can show your site or employer straight away. Medium impact glasses aren't designed for chemical splash, welding or tasks that require goggles or a face shield, so always check your site's PPE requirements.
What prescriptions can you make online?
Online, we make single vision lenses, for either distance or near (reading). Prescription powers range from +6.00 to -6.00, and your combined sphere and cylinder can't exceed +6.00 or -6.00. If you need progressive, bifocal or occupational lenses, or your prescription is outside this range, visit one of our optometry stockists. These lenses need in-person measurements, like segment height, to get right. If you can't select the values on your script when ordering, email enquiries@safestyle.com.au with a copy of your prescription and we'll help.
What do I need to order prescription safety glasses?
You need three things: a current glasses prescription from your optometrist (generally valid for 2 years from issue), your pupillary distance (PD), and your choice of lens and coating. A contact lens prescription won't work, as it's measured differently to a glasses script. If your script doesn't list a PD, ask your optometrist or measure it at home with the free Eye Measure app (iOS and Android). Not sure where the numbers go? You can upload a photo of your script when ordering, or email enquiries@safestyle.com.au and our team will help.
Which lens type should I choose?
Clear: best for indoor work, workshops and low light, with UV400 protection and no tint. Blue Light: looks almost clear and filters blue light from screens and LED or fluorescent lighting, for office, healthcare and long screen days. Tinted: a grey sun lens that cuts brightness for everyday outdoor work while keeping screens easy to read. Polarised Grey: cuts reflected glare off water, roads, glass and metal, ideal for outdoor trades, daytime driving and fishing. Polarised Brown: the same glare reduction with warmer contrast and better depth perception in changing light. Photochromic: clear indoors and darkens in sunlight, so it suits people who move between indoor and outdoor work all day. Tinted and polarised lenses aren't for night use, polarised lenses can make some LCD screens look patchy, and photochromic lenses won't darken much behind a car windscreen because the glass blocks UV.
Which lens coating should I choose?
Every lens includes our Super Hard Coat, an anti-scratch layer for everyday durability, though no lens is completely scratch-proof. VP Multi Coat + Anti Reflective adds a hydrophobic layer that repels water, oil and dirt, so lenses stay cleaner and are easier to wipe. It also reduces reflections and glare, including light bouncing off the back of the lens. It's a good upgrade if you drive a lot, work under bright lights, or find your lenses always grubby. UV Filter includes everything in the multi coat, plus anti-bacterial protection and an extra UV blocker that stops UV reflecting off the back of the lens into your eyes. It's a good choice for full days outdoors. If you want blue light filtering, select Blue Light in the lens menu rather than the coating menu.
What are the frames and lenses made of? Can the lenses be made thinner?
The frames are made from EMS Grilamid TR XE, which is tough, flexible, chemical resistant and 51% bio-based. It's a different material to our non-prescription frames, designed to handle prescription lens fitting and all-day wear. The lenses are impact-resistant polycarbonate or Trivex. We can't make lenses thinner using high-index materials, because those don't meet the impact requirements of the safety standard. If you have a higher prescription, expect slightly thicker lenses than your everyday glasses.
Will Harps fit me?
Harps are a larger fit, with an iconic retro brow-bar style that suits medium to larger faces best. Harps are a favourite with women who love a standout frame, but if you have a smaller face or prefer a more compact fit, Cruisers and Classics are also available in prescription and sit closer to the face. Frame measurements are in the sizing guide on this page. If your glasses feel too tight or loose once they arrive, our optometry stockists can adjust the frame for you.
How long will my prescription glasses take to arrive?
Every pair is custom made to your prescription, so please allow up to 18 business days for delivery. Production usually takes up to 14 days, and then your order ships with Australia Post. If you order non-prescription items in the same order, we'll hold everything and send it together in one shipment. If you haven't heard from us after 14 days, email enquiries@safestyle.com.au.
What comes in the box?
Your prescription safety glasses come with a SafeStyle hard case, a microfibre pouch, a SafeStyle lanyard and your certification certificate. Keep your glasses in the hard case when you're not wearing them, as storing them outside the case isn't covered by the warranty.
Can I claim these on my health fund or tax?
Yes, on both. SafeStyle is registered with all Australian health funds through HICAPS, and your invoice includes everything you need to claim. Our provider number is 449376JW. The item codes are 110 for the frame (spectacle frames) and 212 for single vision lenses (pair). How much you get back depends on your level of extras cover, so check with your fund. Prescription safety glasses used for work are generally tax deductible, but speak to your tax agent about your situation.
Can I buy these through my optometrist instead?
Yes. You can buy a complete pair of SafeStyle prescription safety glasses from any of our optometry stockists, and the price is the same whether you buy in store or online. Going through a stockist is the best option if you need progressive, bifocal or occupational lenses, if your prescription is outside our online range, or if you'd like help with measurements and fitting. Use the stockist finder on our website to find one near you.
Can I change or cancel my order, or fix a wrong prescription?
Orders go into production straight away. If it's been less than 1 hour since you ordered, email enquiries@safestyle.com.au immediately and we'll do our best to change or cancel it. After that, we can't change the frame, lens or prescription details, so please double-check everything, especially your script values and PD, before confirming. If you've entered the wrong prescription, contact us as soon as possible and we'll fix it if production hasn't started.
Can I return prescription safety glasses?
Because each pair is custom made to your prescription, we can't accept returns or exchanges for change of mind or for incorrect details entered at checkout. This doesn't affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law if your glasses are faulty or don't match what you ordered. If something doesn't look right with your vision, email enquiries@safestyle.com.au with your order number, a copy of your prescription and a description of the issue. A photo of the production card from your order also helps. We'll check your glasses against your script and work out the next steps with you.
What warranty do prescription safety glasses come with?
Manufacturing defects are covered for 12 months from purchase, and lens coatings carry a 2-year warranty from your order date. For minor defects, we'll repair or replace your glasses. For a major failure, such as one that affects safety, you can choose a replacement or a refund. The warranty doesn't cover scratches or general wear and tear, accidental damage, chemical exposure (including sunscreen), heat damage, storing your glasses outside the supplied hard case, or loss or theft. To claim, email enquiries@safestyle.com.au with your order number, a description of the fault and photos. If you bought through a stockist, claim through them. This warranty is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
