Mate, Are You Blind?! Time To Get Prescription Safety Glasses

We’re here to explain why you need prescription safety glasses and why they’re so important, in and easy and understandable way.

We might chuck in the odd statistic, but we’ll skip the complicated stuff and boring safety procedures. Promise.

Mate, are you blind?!

It's a phrase that most tradies have heard (or have yelled) on site, when someone makes a dodgy mistake.

People get measurements wrong, mis-read things, or nearly take your eye out!

Yeah, everyone makes mistakes, we give our mate a bit of stick, and we move on.

But, stop for a second…

What if you actually can’t see properly?

It might seem a bit nuts, but that’s the reality for thousands of Aussies, whether they know it or not.

If your vision’s blurry on the worksite, you’re putting yourself and others at risk.

Prescription safety glasses are the answer.

They’re a game-changer for tradies young and old - and anyone who needs clear vision and eye protection while they’re at work.

Why Are Prescription Safety Glasses Important?

Let’s start with the basics here.

The obvious answer is that people need prescription safety glasses to see properly while they’re working on site.

And whilst, of course, that’s right - there’s more to it.

In Australia over 10,000 people are hospitalised due to eye injuries every single year.

And this is a growing trend, particularly on the worksite.

Since 2018, there’s been a 41% increase in work-related eye injuries.

So, from a simple perspective of avoiding eye injuries, wearing proper eye protection is the best thing you can do.

And we’ve also got some impressive sounding numbers to back that up…

90% of all eye injuries are preventable by wearing appropriate protective eyewear.

And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that if you can see properly you’re less likely to have an accident at work - whether that’s an eye injury, or to any other body part!

Do You Need Prescription Safety Glasses?

In our experience of providing prescription safety glasses to Tradies, people fall into 3 different categories:

  1. You don’t know you need prescription glasses at all
  2. You wear normal prescription glasses, but not prescription safety glasses
  3. You wear prescription safety glasses, but they’re ugly!

Unless your eye sight is perfect (lucky you by the way), you’ll fit into one of these categories.

Let’s talk through each of these categories:

1. You don’t know you need prescription glasses

Many Australians don’t know they need prescription!

Many people think they have perfect eye, but haven't noticed that their eyesight has gotten worse over the years.

So first thing’s first - pop down to your local optometrist to get your eyes tested.

This first step is the hardest one.

Getting your eyes tested can be a chore. We’ve all got busy lives. And it can be tough to accept that your eyes aren’t what they once were.

But taking that first step is the most important one.

If you don’t know that your vision is deteriorating, you’re putting yourself (and others) at risk every day.

So take the plunge, visit the optom, and get your eyes checked.

Once you’ve got your script, you’ll have everything you need to get your prescription safety glasses from your optom or online.

2. You wear normal prescription glasses but not prescription safety glasses

Many people don’t know prescription safety glasses exist.

We’re so used to the cheap, ugly throwaway safety glasses that we think these gross creations are the the only option.

But if you need prescription, there’s so much more out there for you!

In the past, prescription safety glasses have been a bit forgotten about. But now, more and more optometrists are stocking prescription safety glasses - and they're becoming more stylish, practical and comfortable ones at that (like SafeStyle!)

At SafeStyle, we’re continuing to create more prescription versions of our frames.

If you need prescription safety glasses, get SafeStyle!

3. You’re wearing prescription safety glasses that aren’t SafeStyle

If you’ve worn prescription safety glasses in the past, the chances are they’re ugly, bulky, cumbersome and uncomfortable.

This was basically all you could get.

But now, prescription safety glasses are vastly improved.

In the same way that SafeStyle led the charge on ‘plano’ (non-prescription) safety glasses, we’re now revolutionising prescription pairs.

You can now get prescription safety glasses that look good, offer great protection, and are comfortable for even the longest shifts.

Look good, see better, stay protected!

What Happens If You Don’t Wear the Right Prescription Safety Glasses?

‘Mate, are you blind?!’

Copping some stick from your mate for mucking up isn’t great, but it’s nowhere near the worst thing that can happen if you don’t wear the right prescription safeties.

If you’re wearing your regular prescription glasses instead of safeties, your eyes aren’t properly protected and a stray bit of debris (or worse) could end up costing you your eyes.

Stuffing up on the job can happen very easily, and you may not even notice it if your vision isn’t at 100%.

And depending on the severity of any accident, other people could end up being hurt or injured.

There can also be long-term eye damage from UV exposure, eye fatigue and more.

The consequences don’t stop there.

If you’re a boss, WorkSafe fines can be $600k+ if an employer isn’t enforcing proper eye protection. This is why it also makes financial sense to provide your employees with proper prescription safety glasses.

So, don’t put off that eye test, check out your vision and look after your eyes.

How to Get Prescription Safety Glasses

Step 1: Get Your Eyes Tested

If you haven’t had an eye test in years (or ever), book one now. You don’t know what you’re missing.

So many times we hear people say “I can see fine.”

Mate, can you?

You never know until you get your eyes tested.

Step 2: Choose the Right Safety Glasses

Once you’ve given the optometrist your script, or uploaded it online, you’ll choose your pair.

Which lenses are best for you?

Choose from clear, polarised, tinted, or photochromic to suit your worksite.

Which frame best suits you?

This is all about personal choice.

Obviously you want to pick a frame you look the look of and that you’re actually going to enjoy wearing!

We recommend trying them on, getting a feel for them and making sure you like them.

You also want to choose a frame that’s going to comfortable for a full day on site.

Step 3: Make Sure They’re Certified

The most important with any pair of safety glasses, is to make sure they’re certified to AS/NZS 1337.1+ safety standards.

Look out for this when you’re choosing your pair.

All SafeStyle pairs are AS/NZS 1337.1+ certified. So you know all our pairs are safe ‘from the worksite to the weekend’.
